Trump news today: Trump seeks meeting with Garland over special counsel probes as hush money trial date set

Trump calls Jan 6 a ‘beautiful day’ during CNN town hall

Donald Trump has called for a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland in the clearest sign yet that an indictment could be on the horizon following the criminal investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents.

In a letter, posted on Truth Social, Mr Trump’s attorneys claimed that he had been “treated unfairly” and was the victim of “ongoing injustice” by Special Counsel Jack Smith who is leading the probe into the trove of documents found at Mar-a-Lago after Mr Trump left office.

It’s common for defence lawyers to seek meetings with the Justice Department when potential indictments are looming, but it’s unusual to seek a meeting with the AG himself.

The letter was sent the same day that Mr Trump appeared in court by video for a second hearing in his criminal case on Tuesday.

The former president was on screen in the Manhattan Criminal Court so that Judge Juan Merchan could make sure he understood the terms of the protective order in the case.

Judge Merchan also set a trial date for 25 March 2024 – in the midst of the Republican primaries. Mr Trump appeared visibly annoyed by this, throwing his arms in the air.

Trump says his First Amendment Rights were ‘violated’

Donald Trump went on a ranting spree following a hearing at the New York County Supreme Court, where the former president claimed his First Amendment Rights were “violated”.

“Just had New York County Supreme Court hearing where I believe my First Amendment Rights,“Freedom of Speech,” have been violated, and they forced upon us a trial date of March 25th, right in the middle of Primary season,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“Very unfair, but this is exactly what the Radical Left Democrats wanted. It’s called ELECTION INTERFERENCE, and nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before,” he added.

Trump’s lawyers say he is being ‘treated unfairly’ over documents probe

Donald Trump’s lawyers said the former president is “being treated unfairly” as they asked for a meeting with attorney general Merrick Garland over the investigation into the handling of classified documents.

Attorneys John Rowley and James Trusty requested a meeting about the Justice Department investigation in a letter posted by Mr Trump on his Truth Social media platform, saying they wanted to discuss “the ongoing injustice being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors”.

The wording echoed Mr Trump’s language about the investigations into whether the former president illegally retained hundreds of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort home in Florida and whether he sought to obstruct government efforts to get the records back.

‘I am entitled to NOTHING?’ asks Trump in bizarre post

Donald Trump launched into a bizarre rant on Truth Social about the payout to Dominion Voting Systems.

“So Dominion gets almost a Billion Dollars and I, after years of Fake News, Hoaxes, Scams, and Investigations, am entitled to NOTHING,” he asked on the social media platform.

“Is that really the way it’s supposed to work? I don’t think so.”

Trump defames E Jean Carroll yet again

Donald Trump launched a fresh defamatory attack on E Jean Carroll hours after her lawyers formally asked to amend her remaining defamation lawsuit against the ex-president to include his smears at a CNN town hall.

Ms Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan filed a proposed update to the $10m Manhattan civil court complaint on Monday to include comments made by Mr Trump after he was found liable for the sexual assault and defamation at a jury trial in New York.

Mr Trump made a perhaps unsurprising move in response, delivering a new compounded salvo via Truth Social on Tuesday morning.

In-fighting among former president’s legal team revealed

An attorney working Donald Trump’s legal team has quit citing in-fighting among the former president’s inner circle.

Timothy Parlatore left his role this week, according to The New York Times, after working for Mr Trump for at least a year.

In an interview with CNN on Saturday, Mr Parlatore explained that the reason for his departure was ongoing friction with Boris Epshteyn, another legal adviser to Mr Trump.

Classified documents probe: Trump Organization ordered to hand over foreign real estate deal records

The Trump Organization has been ordered to hand over records related to foreign real estate deals made since Donald Trump entered the White House – as the investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents continues to heat up.
